Bombing sparks riot in northeast Sri Lankan town; a total of 11 killed at 13:13 on April 12, 2006, EST.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) - Angry mobs set fire to shops following two explosions Wednesday in a restive town in northeast Sri Lanka, officials said. At least 11 people were killed in the blast and subsequent rioting.

An indefinite curfew was imposed on the strategic port town and units from the Sri Lankan army and navy were posted on the streets, said military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe.

Samarasinghe said five people, including one soldier, were killed in the second explosion which triggered the mob violence. Six other people were killed during clashes, Samarasinghe said.

"I heard an explosion and thereafter I received several calls saying that mobs are attacking Tamil people and their shops," said Kadigamathamby Thurairatnasingham, a legislator for Trincomalee.

Suspected rebels have launched two other deadly attacks in Trincomalee this week.

Earlier Wednesday, a separate mine blast struck a truck carrying policemen in the town, killing at least two officers and wounding two others. On Tuesday, at least 11 Sri Lankan military personnel were killed in an attack also blamed on the rebels.
